Molina Orosa Hospital receives accreditation as a Center Committed to Excellence in Nursing Care

The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Manuel Baltar, received this Monday in Madrid the national accreditation as a Center Committed to Excellence in Nursing Care awarded to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Regional Executive.

The award ceremony took place at the Carlos III Health Institute and was also attended by the manager of Health Services of Lanzarote and the nurse Emma Alonso, from the Quality Unit of the aforementioned hospital center, who led the award-winning project.

The Molina Orosa Hospital was selected in 2011 to participate in this program, which aims to facilitate and support the implementation, evaluation and maintenance, in any nursing environment, of good care practices, based on the guidelines developed by the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO). These practices address the management of risk factors in chronic diseases, the assessment of different chronic pathologies, patient safety problems and the proper management of signs and symptoms, among other applications.

Specifically, the guidelines selected by the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, precisely for which this national accreditation has been obtained, have been the prevention of falls and associated injuries in patients over 65 years of age, the care and management of ostomies and the assessment and care of patients with stroke, as well as a guide to environment and collaborative practice in nursing teams.

In 2014, breastfeeding was added to these initiatives, while last year the implementation of the selection of vascular accesses, as well as the care and maintenance of vascular accesses, began.

General results

The Canarian Government highlights the "good results obtained" thanks to the application of this program for nursing, in which 26 Spanish institutions from 13 autonomous communities have participated. Among other things, they point out that falls have been reduced from 2.2% to 1.78%, and the severity of injuries as a result of them has gone from 1.1%, with serious injuries, to 0%. For its part, exclusive breastfeeding at the time of hospital discharge is between 78%-85% (depending on the center), while exclusive breastfeeding at six months as a reference indicator for the WHO has increased from 29.7% to 40.3%.

"Among the clinical processes, the comprehensive assessment and education of patients has increased significantly, reaching figures above 90% in many guidelines," they add. In addition, the detection of pain and the planning of care in this regard are above 90% and 80% respectively, while the marking of the ostoma (directly related to the quality of life of the patient with ostomy) has increased to 54%.
