The Lidl supermarket in Arrecife has been sanctioned by the Labor Inspectorate after verifying the existence of several irregularities in the hiring of its workers.
This sanction originated from a complaint that the CCOO union filed last August, in which it stated the existence of workers hired on a half-day basis who, in reality, work a full day. Likewise, the union denounced that these workers worked overtime daily and outside of opening hours, some of which were not paid and, those that were, appear as a supplement on the payroll and not as overtime.
This complaint led the Labor Inspectorate to appear last September at the Lidl supermarket in Arrecife, where it was able to verify that there were indeed workers who, hired part-time, were working a full day. "Part-time workers may not work overtime," states the Labor resolution, which highlights that, on the contrary, these workers were indeed working overtime and not supplementary hours.
Therefore, by resolution dated October 5, 2010, it was decided to sanction Lidl to correct the "verified irregularities."
Other complaints
However, these were not the only events that Comisiones Obreras denounced. In its complaint, the union also stated that since June 2010, workers were paid "a bonus of 300 euros on their payroll so that they would not enjoy the vacations that corresponded to them." A bonus that, according to CCOO, "has not been negotiated with the workers but imposed," and that was "removed in case the workers wanted to enjoy their vacations or go on sick leave."
Likewise, the union denounced that "the professional categories of the workers are not respected, since everyone has the obligation to be restocking merchandise, cleaning, etc."
For the moment, these events have not been verified by the Labor Inspectorate but, according to the general secretary of CCOO in Lanzarote, Vicky Sande, "they are being investigated."
