The Island Council's Governing Council, held this Monday, has approved taking to the next Plenary a proposal to allow councilors who request it to participate and vote from home in the plenary sessions held by the institution.

For this, it will be necessary to approve a modification of the Organic Regulations of the Island Council, which is what will be submitted to debate in the next session. According to the institution, the change will affect articles 79 and 80, establishing that councilors "in a situation of prolonged leave, permit or similar situation due to maternity or paternity" can attend the Plenary Sessions of the Island Council telematically, as well as being able to vote remotely by electronic means.

Those who want to make use of this option must first request authorization from the president, under any of these causes. In addition, in order to vote, they will have to follow the entire session, being able to intervene like any other councilor through a videoconference.

"The effort for greater equality involves establishing reconciliation measures," explained the president of the Island Council, María Dolores Corujo, to justify this initiative. "That is why, within the great effort we are making so that men and women have fewer obstacles and are more equal in their jobs, the councilors of the Island Council begin by setting an example and that personal or family circumstances are not an impediment to doing our job," she added.

In this way, the government group affirms that "it seeks that the councilors who take advantage of this modality can participate with the same rights and obligations as those who attend in person".
