The spokesman for the Iberia Strike Committee, León Fajardo, asserted this Friday on the radio program Buenos Días Lanzarote that the UGT union has abandoned the 5 members that the company fired this week under an employment regulation file approved by the Ministry of Labor. In total, 17 were fired at the Lanzarote work center, while in the Canary Islands the number of those affected is 28.
Farjardo assured that the workers called their union the day they received the dismissal letter to appear at the airport but "they did not answer the phone and disappeared on the spot."
The leader of the strikers reproached the attitude of the union in Lanzarote, comparing it with the behavior of the island representation of Comisiones Obreras and USO, which strongly support the demands of the employees and have been quick to provide advice after the dismissals despite the fact that in Madrid those same unions supported the employment regulation file presented by Iberia.
12,000 suitcases
The Strike Committee maintains absolute secrecy about the date on which the strike will resume, however, if there is a day of protest on Sunday, at least 12,000 passengers and the same number of suitcases could suffer the effects, including those that are not dispatched to their destination and those that are not received by the tourists who arrive on the Island.
Iberia's handling serves more than 30 charter flights on a Sunday. The Cabildo is concerned about what may happen when the Committee resumes the strike, so by unanimous decision of the Plenary it decided to address the Government of the Canary Islands and the Central Executive again to find a definitive formula that ends the labor conflict and does not put at risk the tourist activity as the economic engine of the Island.
