The Government of the Canary Islands will manage the new Registry of Empty Homes through the Housing Exchange offices, which will be created after the approval of the modification of the Canary Islands Housing Law. Currently, the change to this law is being processed urgently.
The Canary Islands Executive has highlighted that the Housing Exchange offices have "extensive experience" in the management of rentals and will be able to face "with guarantees" the Registry of Empty Homes and the accommodation of families.
Until the final approval of the modification of the Law and the new promotion measures of the new Housing Plan, the Exchange offices will continue to manage the rentals of the approximately 10,000 rental apartments that currently maintain a signed contract. In addition, it will be responsible for managing the multi-risk insurance and guarantees for non-payment that are provided to all owners who in these years have given their apartments to the Exchange.
The owners of the private homes that were still without rent and registered in the Exchange Offices will be released from their obligations, such as not being able to freely rent their house for five years. In addition, the key will be returned and they will be called, in case they wish to put their home back for rent in the Exchange Offices, when the new regulatory and planning scenario is approved.
