The Plenary of the San Bartolomé City Council approved this Thursday the proposal of the government group for the new El Quintero school to be named 'Mayor Alexis Tejera Lemes', with the favorable vote of the PSOE and the abstention of the opposition.

“This proposal represents the enormous affection that the citizens of San Bartolomé have shown towards the figure of Alexis, who fought so hard for this school until he wrested from the various institutions involved their commitment to the definitive promotion of the project”, expresses the current mayor, Isidro Pérez.

In the extraordinary plenary session held this Thursday, focused entirely on the future educational center, the draft agreement to be signed with the Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands for the execution of the work has also been approved.

Pérez explains that in the document, which will now be transferred to the Government Council of the Canary Islands, the economic commitment of the Ministry to the project is established, an economic contribution that amounts to 7.57 million euros (400,000 euros in 2022, a total of 3.58 million in 2023 and the same amount in 2024).

"Citizen proposals" to honor the deceased mayor

Isidro Pérez emphasizes that for Alexis Tejera “it was always a priority to achieve the necessary investments and support to make a project necessary for San Bartolomé a reality”. In addition, he explains that the City Council's initiative by which the procedure for changing the name of the school begins “is the result of the numerous citizen proposals that have reached the institution, requests for squares, streets or avenues to bear the name of the deceased mayor”.

In this sense, Pérez maintains that the commitment that Alexis Tejera always demonstrated to public services “and his firm belief in education as one of the basic pillars of social welfare more than justify the agreement reached by this City Council for the El Quintero school to bear his name”.

Isidro Pérez considers “an act of justice” that future generations of boys and girls in the municipality “know who this mayor was and how much he did in such a short time for his people, from his commitment to guaranteeing the welfare state and his defense of free, universal and quality education”.

Isidro Pérez affirms that if today the allocation of 400,000 euros for the start of the execution of the works is a fact - investment authorized by the Government of the Canary Islands from funds from the Ministry of Education - it is, to a large extent, "thanks to the effort and determination of Alexis Tejera, who made this project a symbol of the San Bartolomé City Council's commitment to quality public services”.

In addition, he thanked the Ministry of Education for its collaboration, which is the responsibility of Manuela Armas. “It is necessary to value the effort and involvement shown by the autonomous department, by the minister and by her entire team to carry out this project so eagerly awaited by the citizens of San Bartolomé”, he pointed out, also highlighting the work carried out in favor of the new CEIP by the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Dolores Corujo, “by claiming before the different administrations the need for this educational infrastructure”.
