The eight people arrested this Monday in the framework of a third phase of Operation "Unión", baptized as Operation "Jable", have begun to testify before the agents of the Central Operative Unit of the Civil Guard, who will interrogate them before they are brought to justice.
The former socialist councilor and prominent former member of the PSOE, Miguel Ángel Leal, has been one of those who have had to appear this Tuesday before the agents, and has been assisted by a private lawyer, unlike what will happen with other detainees, who remain incommunicado by order of the head of the Court of Instruction Number 5 of Arrecife, César Romero Pamparacuatro.
The four detainees who remain incommunicado are the former mayor of Arrecife and current public official of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canary Islands Security Academy, María Isabel Déniz; the former president of Asolan and president and CEO of Horinsa, Francisco Armas; the manager of Urbaser, Jacinto Álvarez; and the head of the Technical Office of the Arrecife City Council, Rafael Arrocha. All of them will have to be assisted by court-appointed lawyers until the judge lifts the order of incommunication.
The rest, both Miguel Ángel Leal and the engineer of the Cabildo Manuel Spínola, the member of the PP and director of a bank office, Julio Romero, and the worker of Urbaser Stephani Jean Valverde, remain arrested but not incommunicado, and have already been able to contact private lawyers. All of them have spent the night in Civil Guard barracks.
Still open
The new operation that started this Monday remains open, according to the Civil Guard, so in the coming days there could be new arrests and charges for this cause.
In addition, the activity will continue in the Courts of Arrecife not only with new possible fronts, but also with the statements of the detainees so far. In principle, the detention of all of them could last a maximum of 72 hours, although the judge could also decide to extend the arrest of some of them depending on the progress of the investigation, as already happened with some of those arrested in the first phase of Operation "Unión".
