The deputy mayor of Teguise, Lourdes Cabrera, assured this Thursday on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero that the new private market that has opened in La Villa "cannot" function, since the land on which it is located only allows sociocultural use. For this reason, she has asked for "calm" from the platform of street vendors of Lanzarote, who have denounced the opening of this venue, located behind the Hermanas Spínola Theater. According to Cabrera, the owner of the operation is Pedro Martín, former PSOE councilor of Teguise, who was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison for forging checks and defrauding the PSOE of 5,518 euros.
The "buzz" that they were going to open this market has been going on since "2008", according to the councilor. "In a plot they have placed a tent with the intention of setting up a market. That plot is not commercial and the market cannot be allowed," she said. Despite this, the promoters of this market installed the tent, put reeds and tapas for sale at one and two euros and even announced the rental of market stalls for 20 euros. They also submitted a responsible declaration for harmless activity to the City Council, according to Cabrera.
The councilor explained that these promoters had, on the one hand, "a building license", but did not have an activity license. "They were required to provide what was missing in terms of the building license and a warning was opened, telling them that they could not open the market because they did not have a license and a sanctioning file would be opened," said Lourdes Cabrera. That day, about a month ago, this market did not open.
On Friday, a new application for a classified activities license was submitted to the Costa Teguise Office. "I don't know if they did it consciously, because the first one was submitted in La Villa. If the documentation is submitted in Costa Teguise, it does not reach us immediately," explained the deputy mayor.
For all these reasons, Cabrera wanted to convey "calm" to the members of the platform of street vendors of Lanzarote and also to the merchants of La Villa, who are "concerned about this competition". "The file will continue its course. The police report on this activity does not coincide with what the project says. The City Council has to initiate a file and if it is not corrected, then the sanction will have to be taken to the plenary session or end up in the Courts," said Cabrera.
Problems with the responsible declaration
In addition, Lourdes Cabrera has also taken the opportunity to warn that "many foreigners are using consultancies to apply for licenses and these consultancies are deceiving the administration and their client". In this sense, she explained that they are presenting the responsible declaration to the City Council, with which you can open an activity without waiting to obtain the license.
However, for this, all the documentation must be in the Consistory. "It all has to be together. You can't go with a piece of paper and have the rest required. This is how they deceive the client and the City Council. We could even ask them for patrimonial responsibilities, so be careful with this situation," she warned.
