The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved the draft regulation for the creation of the Council of the UNESCO Global Geopark Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago, promoted by the island corporation.

"This document, which must now be approved in plenary session, aims to regulate the Geopark Council," said the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo. She also explains that it will be "an island body of an advisory nature, which will be constituted as a channel for the participation of the island's social and economic agents."

Therefore, said Council must collaborate in the execution of its own activities, among which are the conservation and protection of geological heritage, including networking with other Geoparks, as well as issuing annually a proposal for an Action Plan and preparing a Strategic Plan every four years, among other functions.

The Councilor for the Environment and the Lanzarote Geopark, Elena Solís, pointed out that "the use of this geological heritage and the concept of Geopark as economic resources and especially in the development of tourism, as well as promoting and carrying out scientific research activities, promoting educational projects and encouraging the participation of the people of Lanzarote and Graciosa in the planning and management of resources are other objectives of the Geopark, for which the Council will have to ensure."

Will have representation from all political groups

Regarding its composition, the Geopark Council will be composed of six councilors of the Cabildo, the president and seven mayors, so that all political groups of the institution will have representation.

It will also have two commissioners from the Government of the Canary Islands, two others from the Central Government (one from the Ministry of the Environment and another from the Insular Directorate of the State Administration), as well as a representative of the environmental associations of the island, the César Manrique Foundation, the José Saramago Foundation, farmers' associations, tourist business associations, fishing business associations and neighborhood associations respectively.

The unions will also have their space, those of the Spanish National Committee of Geoparks, the University of Las Palmas, the University of La Laguna, the Professional Associations, other businessmen not considered in the previous sections, as well as NGOs, immigrant groups and the hotel sector, all trying to ensure that there is a balanced representation of men and women in the Geopark Council, seeking parity of the same.
