The Council of Ministers has approved this Tuesday the 120 works of the infrastructure plan of the Ministry of the Interior that will be executed in 2022, among which is the Temporary Foreigner Attention Center (CATE) of Arrecife, with the category of work of general interest.

With that rank, the General Directorate of the Police (promoter of the CATE) no longer needs the building permit that corresponds to the City Council of Arrecife: legally it is enough to communicate to the Consistory that it is a project of general interest.

The Arrecife CATE has been built for weeks, but the city's City Council, governed by the PP, has prevented it from coming into operation, because it lacks a municipal license and because, in its opinion, it is in a place that does not meet the conditions.

Without this facility, which according to the Government Delegation has cost 2.1 million euros, the immigrants that Maritime Rescue rescues in the vicinity of Lanzarote or those who disembark on a boat on the island spend the initial 72 hours of police detention in an industrial warehouse with conditions that have been criticized by several NGOs.

The Government Delegation in the Canary Islands considers that the situation that prevents the use of the Lanzarote CATE has been resolved with the agreement adopted this Tuesday by the Council of Ministers.

Interior is protected by the sixth additional provision of Royal Decree-Law 35/2020, of December 22, on urgent measures to support the tourism, hospitality and trade sector and in tax matters.

"Under the protection of the aforementioned provision, the declaration of general interest of this type of actions will allow that, within a month after the mere communication of the project to the competent urban administration, the works may begin without the need for the granting of any municipal license", the Government assures.

The package of 120 works approved this Tuesday includes works in different places in Spain, such as National Police stations, Civil Guard barracks, penitentiary centers and foreign internment centers.
