This morning the search of the municipal offices of the Arrecife City Council ended, which began at ten o'clock on Monday morning by the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard, within the framework of a judicial investigation of alleged payment of illegal commissions.
The records are part of the 'Operación Unión', which has dismantled a plot dedicated to collecting illegal commissions. So far 11 people have been arrested and the operation is still open.
The first arrest occurred at 9:30 next to the bar La Tavernetta, in Arrecife. Three people were arrested, one of whom was carrying a briefcase with 100,000 to allegedly pay a commission. There, two of the intermediaries were arrested.
In the City Council, two municipal officials were arrested, Elena Martín, head of Contracting; and Rafael Arrocha, head of the Technical Office; and two councilors, the one for Urban Planning and Finance, José Miguel Rodríguez; and the one for the General Plan, Ubaldo Becerra. Searches were also carried out in several architects' offices and other offices, such as that of the water company, Inalsa, in Costa Teguise, used by the founder of PIL, Dimas Martín, in his cell and in several private homes.
The list of detainees is completed with a businesswoman related to a communication group, two people close to the PIL, one of them from the PIL Youth and another habitual of Dimas Martín in his stage as president. Both would have acted as intermediaries.
Jorge Álvarez, manager of the company Camilo Álvarez, which is part of Clusa, the concessionaire for the management of the Zonzamas landfill until the council seized said concession a few months ago, was also arrested. He was arrested in Gran Canaria.
The mayor of Arrecife will dismiss the PIL councilors in the City Council this Tuesday. The insular councilors are meeting in the consistory at this time.
