The Civil Guard, in the third phase of Operation JABLE, has arrested a total of seven people in Lanzarote who are accused of, among other things, several crimes of bribery, in its different types. In the three phases of this operation carried out so far, a total of twenty-four people have been arrested between the provinces of Lanzarote, Las Palmas, Madrid and Almería.
Among those arrested are the Minister of the Presidency of the Island Council of Lanzarote, the Councilor for Parks and Gardens and the Councilor for Beaches, Festivities and Local Development of the Arrecife City Council, as well as several businessmen from the island.
This third phase of the investigation has been carried out in Lanzarote, where, in addition to the arrests, various searches have been carried out in the Arrecife City Council's offices, homes and companies of the detainees, seizing a large amount of documentation, both in computer and paper format, which is being analyzed by the investigators.
The Civil Guard began the arrests and searches of this third phase of the operation first thing in the morning, with the proceedings lasting for several hours.
Operation Jable, developed these weeks by the Central Operative Unit of the Civil Guard, has revealed a complex and important network of corruption, based in several institutions on the island of Lanzarote.
This phase of Operation Jable originates from the analysis of the documentation seized in the searches carried out in the Arrecife City Council, as well as to various businessmen, in the course of Operation Union carried out last year by the Civil Guard.
This corruption network would have been dedicated, allegedly, to collecting illegal commissions from businessmen in Lanzarote, in order to obtain the award of contracts for the works and services that were carried out on the island.
The operation is being carried out by agents of the Urban Crime Group of the Central Operative Unit of the Civil Guard, under the direction of the Investigating Court No. FIVE of Arrecife and the Prosecutor's Office for the Environment and Urban Planning.
The Organized Crime Team (ECO) of the Civil Guard of the Canary Islands has also participated in the operation, together with territorial units of the same Corps from the places of action.
The investigation, which is under summary secrecy, remains open.
