The Minister of Education and Universities of the Government of the Canary Islands, Soledad Monzón, presented this Friday at a press conference the expansion project of the Los Geranios Center for Early Childhood and Primary Education (CEIP), works that will be completed in September to welcome the Primary students of the CEIP Mercedes Medina, within the school reorganization plan that the Ministry is developing in several centers in Arrecife to make possible the conversion of the IES Zonzamas into an Integrated Vocational Training Center.

The project, which was commissioned this year with a budget of 41,730 euros, involves the construction of 8 new classrooms for Infants, the creation of a multipurpose classroom and the expansion of the dining room and kitchen of the center, to accommodate Primary students from the CEIP Mercedes Medina, which, in turn, will gradually become a Secondary Education Institute (IES). The project will be put out to tender, by open procedure, in the coming months.
In total, the expansion will occupy 556.54 square meters in the case of classrooms and 431.85 square meters in the case of dining room and kitchen facilities. Thus, the infrastructures will comprise two new modules, which will have their own access for students from the outside and will expand a third module, already existing, where the dining room facilities are currently located.
The head of Education highlighted during the presentation of the project at the CEIP the importance of the actions that have been developed since last year, both from the field of management and in the implementation of the works necessary to make possible the reorganization of education in Arrecife. Soledad Monzón, who detailed the characteristics of the works together with the general director of Centers and Educational Infrastructure of the Ministry, Ana Dorta, also thanked, at the presentation ceremony, the entire educational community "for their involvement, their proposals and their willingness to assess these changes and provide new options".
"The creation of the Integrated Vocational Training Center has required an enormous effort to reorganize the entire schooling system in Arrecife, with the works that this entails", Monzón stressed.
The Minister highlighted, in this sense, the works carried out this summer at the CEIP Mercedes Medina, which had, in its design, the participation of the educational community of the center. With a total investment of 58,328.44 euros, the Ministry executed works to adapt the spaces to meet the specific needs of Secondary education, to accommodate during this course the first year ESO students from the CEIP Los Geranios.
The improvement of the facilities has provided the center with a Laboratory, Technology Classroom, Plastic and Audiovisual Classroom and Music Classroom.
