The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, has announced that he will take to the next Governing Council the signing of an agreement with the Canarian Police to improve "the development and well-being of the island in terms of security."
This agreement between the Island Council of Lanzarote and the Public Administration of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, through the Ministry of the Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security (APCAC), aims to provide adequate facilities to the General Corps of the Canarian Police in Lanzarote. This will allow establishing an Island police station and a permanent base of personnel and material of the body in Arrecife, thus strengthening the security and protection capabilities on the island.
The Island Council will commit to cede the use of island-owned or leased facilities, adapted to the operational needs of the Canarian Police, and to undertake the necessary improvements so that these facilities comply with the security and operation requirements. Likewise, an agreement has been foreseen so that any improvement made to the facilities becomes the property of the Cabildo at the end of the agreement.
For its part, the APCAC will commit to accept the transfer of use of the properties that the Cabildo de Lanzarote will make available, and to maintain a permanent allocation of personnel and material resources for the operation of the police station.
Economic commitments and duration
Although the Cabildo will be in charge of the improvement and conditioning project of the property, the costs derived from the maintenance and conservation of the property, as well as the ordinary supplies, will be assumed by the General Directorate of Security, so it will not imply an increase in the previous public expenditure for the Administration of the Autonomous Community.
Likewise, the agreement will have an initial validity of four years, with the possibility of extension for an additional period of up to four years. During this time, a Monitoring Committee, formed by members of both parties, will be responsible for supervising the fulfillment of the commitments established and for resolving any controversy that may arise.
Oswaldo Betancort stressed the relevance of this agreement for the security and well-being of the island community: "This agreement is a guarantee of progress for Lanzarote. It will allow us to strengthen the presence of the General Corps of the Canarian Police on the island, which will result in greater security for all our neighbors," he assured.
The president also stressed that this agreement is part of a broader strategy of orderly and sustainable growth for the island: "We are committed to projects that ensure the well-being of our citizens, and this agreement is only the beginning of many others that will follow in this line," he concluded.
