The Cabildo will transfer unaccompanied minors arriving on the island by boat to the La Santa hostel after reaching an agreement with the company that manages this space, as confirmed by the Minister of Public Works of the Cabildo, Maite Corujo, who explained that the company will be compensated for it.

Already in the Cabildo plenary session last Friday, after it was announced that the Ministry of Defense had refused to cede the Arrecife barracks, Corujo stated that she had contacted the company that manages the hostel to find out if it was available. However, the response was that it was planning to host several people over the weekend for a sporting event.

This Monday, however, the Cabildo has managed to reach an agreement, but must wait "for the company to manage the commitments it has" for these days. "The idea is that the hostel will be available next week," said the Minister of Social Welfare.

A transfer "for a few months"

As Maite Corujo explained, this transfer will only be "temporary", "for a few months". "We have established a period of time to be able to use that space, but we do not know how long we are going to need it or how many places, because they may stop coming, but this may have only just begun," said the PP councilor.

In addition, the Cabildo will compensate the company for the use of this space. "An agreement will be reached. Contracting is looking at the form and legal fit to do everything based on what the law protects us. We are going to pay for the place as if the hostel were being used, because we cannot go to the detriment of their activity," said Corujo, who stated that "the cost of the places" will be assumed "by the Cabildo and by the Government of the Canary Islands in the proportion that corresponds to each one".

Some minors have already been transferred to the Máguez Nature Classroom

The Minister of Social Welfare of the Cabildo has pointed out that the regional Executive "is already lending a hand", since the Máguez Nature Classroom has been used since Saturday to house some of the minors, a space that is being managed by the Government of the Canary Islands through an NGO.

As Corujo explained, there are currently 80 minors arriving by boat on the island, of which 36 are in the Máguez Nature Classroom and the rest in the tents that the Cabildo was forced to install due to the lack of space in the minor centers. "Afterwards, we will keep the 15 in Yaiza, which are the ones that fit in the center, and the rest will all go to the hostel," the councilor detailed.
