The Island Commission for Historical Heritage approved this Monday to open a file to restore the altered physical reality in the Jameos del Agua. It was also approved to continue with the works before that file is closed. In February, the Heritage technicians considered that a "significant attack" had been carried out against the Jameos by making a large hole in the volcanic flow that was not authorized. The open file must determine the responsibilities for that hole.
The Commission ruled favorably on Amendment number three of these works, which include the dressing rooms and the elevator for the stage of the Jameos auditorium. This Amendment had been approved by the island president, Pedro San Ginés, without Heritage informing it beforehand, as is required. After the dismissal of the previous Heritage inspector and based on a report from the new inspector, it has been agreed to lift the precautionary suspension of the works.
According to the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés, "most of the works of the aforementioned amendment are already executed because, among other things, they had been authorized by the previous president of the Corporation, Manuela Armas, through a provision dated August 29, 2008 in which she resolved to authorize the drafting of modified project number three, as well as the continuity of the works while it is being processed, given that its paralysis would cause serious damage to the Corporation".
The decision to open the file and continue with the works was taken with the favorable votes of the president Pedro San Ginés and the representatives of the Canarian Coalition (CC), Party of Independents of Lanzarote, Popular Party (PP) and Nationalist Party of Lanzarote, and with the vote against of the Socialist Party (PSC). The César Manrique Foundation and the Haría City Council were absent from the meeting.
According to the representative of the PSC, Manuela Armas, "the works cannot continue because the work is flawed", since the file has not yet been resolved. The socialists have requested a report from the Secretary of the Cabildo to determine if it is legal to continue with the works before resolving the file.
Old Cabildo
On the other hand, the Commission also gave the green light to the rehabilitation project of the Old Cabildo House that will cost 274,000 euros. The PSC also voted against because the Works Master Plan, necessary for buildings considered Assets of Cultural Interest, has not been carried out.
The socialists point out that the works will end up costing more because the state of some areas of the building, such as the floor, access for the disabled or the entrance plinth, has not been taken into account. They ask that the work be awarded to a temporary union of companies in which there is one specialized in Heritage. The government group alleges that it is not mandatory for works of less than 350,000 euros.
