The Department of Energy and Industry of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, led by Miguel Ángel Jiménez, has initiated the procedures to establish an energy community called Local Energy Community (CEL) Toda Lanzarote, a non-profit association.

With this objective, the Department assures that the CEL will allow for "a greater use of renewable energies on the island, as well as access to renewable energy sources for people without the possibility for it, education and citizen awareness, in addition to stimulating the participation of the population in the electrical system and promoting the incorporation of new technologies, key on the island of Lanzarote."

The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, considers that "a very important step will be taken in the change of the energy model in Lanzarote since, as a consequence, it will be possible to join a self-consumption installation when they cannot or do not wish to have their own installation, as in the case of rentals or families with little economic capacity."

For his part, the Minister of New Technologies, Energy and Industry, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, explains that "the energy communities that plan to join must adjust to certain conditions such as a self-consumption radius of two kilometers, a maximum generation power of 120 KW or an open and voluntary participation, among other issues."

Energy Management System

The Energy Management System to be used consists of a platform that communicates with hardware communication, control and measurement devices, such as the systems of the electricity marketers that supply grid energy to the members of the community. Through the application, the corresponding users will be able to consult the ratio of generation and use of photovoltaic energy in different time ranges.

This project will promote, in terms of the economic sphere, a large economic investment in renewable energy generation sources carried out by families, small businesses and SMEs in the participating municipalities. In addition to generating local employment and a 20% saving in annual energy costs.

On the other hand, with respect to the environmental sphere, according to the Cabildo of Lanzarote, "a large number of families will benefit from 100% renewable electricity consumption, achieve sufficient energy autonomy for the island, an improvement in the energy sufficiency ratio and a positive impact on the value chain of self-consumption that leads to zero emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG)."
