The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, together with the Minister of Territorial Policy, Jesús Machín, recently held a meeting with the Councilor for Urban Planning of the Arrecife City Council, Maciot Cabrera, and the Deputy Mayor of the city, Echedey Eugenio, in which they discussed, among other issues, the possibility of including in the next Supplementary General Planning Plan of the city of Arrecife the option of allowing an additional height in homes located in expansion areas of the capital, that is, in neighborhoods such as Maneje, San Francisco Javier or Argana.
During the meeting, Betancort conveyed to the municipal officials the demand of numerous citizens with whom he maintains contact and who have expressed their concern about the housing crisis that affects both Arrecife and the entire island. Many residents "have requested to explore alternatives that allow them to build an additional floor in their homes to allocate it to their relatives, especially young people who have difficulties accessing housing in the current market."
“From the Cabildo we consider it convenient to study this option, always with the necessary technical rigor and with the condition of restricting in all cases the vacation rental of these homes, thus guaranteeing that the measure fulfills its objective of facilitating access to housing for our young people”, highlighted Oswaldo Betancort, who also spoke of “responsible urban planning adapted to the real needs of citizens”.
For his part, the Councilor for Urban Planning of Arrecife, Maciot Cabrera, was receptive to the proposal raised by the president of the Cabildo and assured that the City Council will evaluate the possibility of incorporating this type of modification in the municipal planning. “We are aware of the housing problems that affect Arrecife and the need to offer viable solutions for the neighborhood. From the Department of Urban Planning we are open to studying measures like this and analyzing their viability within the regulatory framework, always guaranteeing an orderly urban development”, Cabrera affirmed.
