The Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved a new addendum to the agreement signed with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families of the Government of the Canary Islands, which will allow to improve and redistribute the social health resources in more municipalities of the island, incorporating new infrastructures where they did not exist before, as in Yaiza or Haría. The measure responds to the need to comply with the European objectives of transforming the model of attention to dependency, adapting it to a closer, personalized and dignified attention.
With this addendum, the planned investment of 9,223,818.87 euros from the Mechanism for Recovery and Resilience of the European Union (Next Generation EU) is maintained, and 100 new public places are guaranteed in Lanzarote, 40 residential and 60 day stay. In addition, there will be no modifications in the deadlines, nor in the objectives, and the places initially committed will not be reduced either.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, stressed that this agreement represents a qualitative and quantitative leap in the network of care of Lanzarote. “We rehabilitate spaces with patrimonial value, adapting them to the new European model focused on people, with distributed, sustainable and accessible resources from all the municipalities”, he pointed out.
For its part, the vice president and head of the Area of Planning and Coordination of Projects, María Jesús Tovar, stressed that “the island planning is focusing on complying with the technical and regulatory criteria of the State and European Recovery Plan, and on transforming the architecture of social services with an innovative look”.
The Minister of Social Welfare and Equality Marci Acuña, valued that “with this modification we achieve a more equitable redistribution of resources, responding to the existing deficit in municipalities such as Yaiza or Haría, and improving the island coverage in terms of attention to dependency, thus consolidating the model of the island of care”. He also announced that “from the Cabildo are making intense efforts to achieve an additional item of 1.4 million euros, in order to reach 10 million total investment in 2026 and incorporate new places that respond to the high existing demand”.
New actions distributed by municipalities
Among the planned actions, include the acquisition and adaptation of properties in the municipalities of Arrecife, Tinajo, Haría and Yaiza, among others, for social health purposes such as day centers, residences for the elderly and housing for people with disabilities.
Specifically, 15 residential places will be created for people with disabilities in Arrecife, 10 residential places for the elderly in Haría, 15 residential places in Yaiza, 20 day center places in Tinajo and another 20 in Arrecife, in addition to a new multipurpose center in Arrecife with 20 places between residence and day center.
The commitment of the Cabildo of Lanzarote with the fulfillment of the Objective CID 323, which provides for the creation of residential, non-residential and day places to adapt the system to long-term care, is thus consolidated through an approach of rigorous technical planning, balanced territorial distribution and continuous improvement of public social health services.
