The Cabildo of Lanzarote has had to rent a second home to welcome victims of gender violence on the island, as the space in the property it already had has been exhausted in recent days.

"Of course, gender violence does not stop due to the state of alarm. Unfortunately, there are still episodes and from the administration we have to continue providing this service and being even more attentive so that, when a case occurs, these women are well cared for," said the Minister of Social Welfare of the institution, Marcos Bergaz, who explained that this new resource has been enabled because the one they had was "full".

"All alerts are in place and we continue to attend to all incidents that may be occurring in the field of gender violence, minors, homeless people, with the shelter we have in the Sports City and in the field of residences establishing maximum caution," Bergaz said.

It should be remembered that, during the state of alarm, the Government of the Canary Islands, with the support of pharmaceutical associations, has launched the 'Mask-19' campaign, a keyword that women who may be suffering a situation of gender violence in their home can use to ask for help in pharmacies.

Among the cases that have come to light on the island in recent days is that of a man who was arrested by the Local Police of Arrecife, against whom there were already several complaints and even a restraining order. According to the City Council, the woman was found in the house "in a state of panic" and locked in the room with her two daughters, aged 7 and 9.

Mararía care service

For its part, the Mararía Social and Cultural Association for Women has reported that its comprehensive care services are being carried out by telephone and/or telematically, in compliance with the state of alarm and for the "safeguarding of the health" of both its workers and users and volunteers;

"We are facing a situation of special vulnerability for all women victims of gender violence and their dependent minors, who in many cases still live with the aggressor, so information and support services are essential for both women victims of gender violence and those who are in a situation of vulnerability or social exclusion," the association says.

To do this, they can contact their professionals through the landline 928 80 48 34, mobile phone 630 856 076 and email [email protected] , from Monday to Friday during normal hours: 09 to 13 hours and 16 to 20 hours.

At the same time, Mararía maintains its work of raising awareness among the population in the prevention of gender violence on its social networks, through which they can also contact its team: https://twitter.com/mararia (Twitter), https://es-es.facebook.com/asociacionmararia (Facebook) and its website https://mararialanzarote.com.

Mararia also recalls that, in addition to going to pharmacies and asking for a 'Mask-19', both victims and anyone who hears and/or witnesses acts of gender violence can go to the emergency telephone number 112, call 016 or send an email to [email protected], send a whatsapp for immediate emotional support to the numbers 682 916 136 or 682 508 507 and go to the State Security Forces and Corps.
