The Cabildo dismisses Manuel Perdomo, the Heritage inspector

The Heritage Inspector of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Manuel Perdomo, has been dismissed this Thursday from his position as head of this area. The possibility of removing him from his position had been considered by the Cabildo's government group for some time, and especially in recent weeks, in which several controversies have arisen due to political decisions that went against the reports issued by the Heritage technicians.

Although the possibility of opening the position to competition to carry out the dismissal had been considered, the government group has finally decided to materialize the dismissal and leave another Cabildo official in charge of this area, at least temporarily.

The reason given by the president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, who raised the issue in the plenary session held this Thursday, is that this position should be filled by a "career official".

Perdomo had held this position for nearly two decades, after receiving an honorary appointment, which recognized his knowledge in the field. Now, the government group has presented two reports from the secretary and the auditor of the Cabildo to support their decision. In addition, they deny that this dismissal has anything to do with the controversies they have had, especially in recent weeks, with the technicians in this area.

Key in Los Dolores

The decision comes less than three months before the trial for the Los Dolores bathrooms, which at the end of October will put the historical leader of the PIL, Dimas Martín, who was the Councilor for Historical Heritage when the works were carried out, Sergio Machín (then a member of the PIL and currently a Councilor for CC), and the head of the Technical Office, José Manuel Fiestas, in the dock.

For the latter two, the Prosecutor's Office is asking for one year and nine months in prison and seven years of disqualification, while for Dimas Martín it is requesting two years in prison and ten years of special disqualification for employment or public office. All of them are accused of an alleged crime of damage to historical heritage and another of prevarication, because the bathrooms were built in a protected space.

Among other things, the Court considered that the three defendants participated in the decision to carry out this work "knowing that it entails the destruction of elements that are part of an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC)".

The testimony and reports of the Heritage technicians on the destruction of the lava flow are one of the pieces that support the case.

Other controversies

In addition, in recent weeks there have been several controversies that have pitted the Cabildo's government group against the Heritage technicians. The latest, for the building of the old Arrecife police station. The Corporation rejected a Heritage report that advised maintaining the facade, and opted to demolish it based on an external report from the College of Architects of Lanzarote since, according to Pedro San Ginés, it was "better founded".

On the other hand, the controversy over the works of the Los Jameos del Agua elevator continues to be open. The works were paralyzed last April by Heritage, after the technicians issued reports stating that an unauthorized "significant excavation" had been carried out, in addition to several interventions that violate what was contemplated in the project and that represented a significant attack" against this space. To this day, the works have not been able to resume.

Currently, the Councilor for Heritage of the Cabildo is Plácida Guerra, for the Party of Independents of Lanzarote. This formation has also maintained open confrontations with the Heritage technicians in recent years. Even, in the summary of Operation "Unión", there are conversations between the former Councilor of Arrecife Ubaldo Becerra and Dimas Martín, in which they raise the need to carry out dismissals in this department.
