The Department of the Environment of the Cabildo has undertaken in recent days the closure of access to the Cueva de los Siete Lagos to preserve "the volcanic structure and preserve the endemisms and invertebrate fauna" found in this place. In this way, the aim is to prevent uncontrolled, unsafe and dangerous access to the cave.
However, universities, educational centers or research, study and conservation entities, as well as other tourist and educational entities that require access to the volcanic tube, "must process the relevant permits and authorizations in the Environment Service of the Cabildo de Lanzarote", according to the Cabildo.
The entrance to this cavity is through a vertical jameo of about 10 meters high, with a slope of 45 degrees. The action that is being developed in this space is the conditioning of the access and the replacement of an old gate existing at the entrance of this cavity by a metal gate in black iron of about 35 square meters.
Similarly, the counselor also hopes that "in the future, it will be possible to reconcile the realization of tourist activities and visits to this protected area, as long as they are requested and comply with the purposes of conservation and its rules".
This action is included within the conservation program designed to achieve the objectives of the Conservation Standards of the Natural Monument of La Corona, which establish among them "the actions of restoration and protection of the managing body with the signaling, maintenance and fencing of heritage, archaeological and ethnographic elements". Parameters that have also been included in the reports of the Historical Heritage Service of the Cabildo de Lanzarote.
