The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has announced the closure of the island's Clean Points "as a further step in the strategy aimed at stopping the spread of the coronavirus." In addition, she has reported on the change in the protocol of action at the Zonzamas landfill for the reception of organic waste. Thus, as part of the protection measures, the staff of the Environmental Complex will stop breaking the bags of household waste in order to avoid accidental infections.

"Depositing the bags without breaking them will hinder the correct processing of organic waste, favoring anaerobic fermentation, something that is not desirable under normal conditions but becomes inevitable in a situation in which the protection measures of people prevail, in this case those who work in the Environmental Complex," explained the president, María Dolores Corujo.

Regarding the clean points, she explained that due to the nature of the service they provide, "their closure will not affect the daily life of citizens, while reducing the possibility of contagion for the workers of these facilities."

The president has acknowledged that this measure will mean that families will not be able to get rid of certain waste while this situation lasts, but she has assessed that the impact of the measure, "taking into account the limitations on mobility, will be minimal on those who need to use the service."

"The type of waste that is collected at the clean points allows the adoption of this measure since it is not organic material except for vegetable oils and these can be stored at home in a reasonable manner," she said.
