The Cabildo of Lanzarote has confirmed in a statement that it has denied authorization to hold the Isla de los Volcanes Rally "due to the impossibility of carrying out the test coinciding with the nesting period of several protected species." This is how they justify why this time the celebration of a test that has been taking place for years will not be allowed.
"In previous editions, the aforementioned rally almost always took place on other dates, which allowed us to consider that it did not generate a significant impact on protected species, some of which enjoy the highest level of protection, because they are considered at risk of extinction," they point out.
"Given the risks indicated by the environmental reports, it has been totally impossible for us to authorize the test," said the first vice president and Minister of Classified Activities, Marcos Bergaz.
Bergaz, accompanied by the Minister of Sports, Alfredo Mendoza, personally conveyed this information to the president of the Las Palmas Automobile Federation, the organizer of the event and a representation of the drivers registered in it.
Both councilors state that they "regret" the situation created, given that the rally was scheduled to begin this Friday, and have pledged to "collaborate with the Federation so that in the summer, with all environmental guarantees, the annual edition of a fully accredited event can be held, not only before the Canary Islands fans but also in the calendar of the national championship itself."
