The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its president Oswaldo Betancort, requests the island's town councils and the State Island Directorate to urgently increase surveillance in the island's agricultural areas, following the new wave of robberies that is seriously affecting local farms.
Betancort has expressed his firm support for the primary sector and has described the robberies as "an unacceptable attack on the daily effort and sacrifice of our farmers". "We cannot allow those who work from sun to sun to sustain our landscape, our economy and our identity to be victims of this type of abuse," the president said.
Likewise, Oswaldo Betancort urges the State security forces to reinforce patrols in rural areas and calls for greater coordination between local, island and state administrations to combat this problem effectively. Likewise, the president and Minister of Agriculture and Livestock has launched a message to the public to encourage collaboration and active denunciation.
“Any strange movement, any suspicious vehicle or unusual presence on the farms can be key to preventing new robberies. Writing down license plates, notifying the Local Police or the Civil Guard, and not looking the other way, can make a difference,” he declared.
The Cabildo reminds that behind each stolen crop there is an affected family and a daily work that is lost. The stolen products not only represent an economic loss, but also a blow to the morale of the agricultural sector, which struggles to get ahead in a context of great challenges.
