The Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved the nominated subsidies for the organizations Cruz Roja, Emerlan and Cultural Association Mararía, in order for them to make available to the Institution their services and accommodation facilities for the urgent care of homeless people on the Island.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, emphasizes that "these aids constitute an intermediate measure, since the definitive solution is being worked on in a long-term project, to manage quickly and effectively the problem of homeless people on the Island" and to evict the temporary shelter enabled in the Sports City of Arrecife, as La Voz already reported.

"We are designing a comprehensive long-term care project, which has begun by giving from the Cabildo, and for the first time in a public institution in Lanzarote, the recognition that the real problem of 'homelessness' deserves," added the president.

The island councilor of Social Welfare, Isabel Martín, assures that "with these subsidies the first steps are being taken in the construction of a new social inclusion service in Lanzarote, which will address this issue from the root and will not only seek to provide a roof for the homeless, but also opportunities to get ahead."

To offer the necessary services to the citizens housed in the Sports City, financial aid will be given to Emerlan and Cruz Roja, while, to specifically assist the women of this shelter affected by this problem and in a situation of special vulnerability, a subsidy will be given to Mararía, an association focused on offering protection and support to this group.

As detailed, Cruz Roja will work, fundamentally, with people suffering from "chronic homelessness", ensuring that they do not lack basic resources such as a house or food, while Emerlan will provide assistance to those whose situation requires support and advice to achieve social reintegration.

Currently, the Island Corporation states that it is working on a new structure to respond to 'homelessness' in Lanzarote, so that studies and data collection are being carried out to know exactly how many people are in this situation and what specific services we will have to enable for comprehensive care.
