The Department of Social Welfare and Inclusion of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Addiction Care Unit 'Dra. Rosa Torres Martínez', is carrying out in the municipalities of Arrecife, Teguise and Tías, a diagnosis of the reality in the field of drug dependence and other addictions. The objective is to obtain information to know the current problems and needs that could condition the quality of life and the general well-being of the young population and to identify which are the risk and protection factors against addictions.

This Wednesday morning, the Councilor for Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, accompanied by the Councilor for Social Services of the Arrecife City Council, Maite Corujo, attended a first working session held in the capital in which technicians from both administrations also participated, as well as representatives of associations and key agents in this area.

The study and diagnosis of the municipal reality will be carried out through surveys in schools that collect consumption habits, perception and information of students from 13 to 18 years old (ESO, Baccalaureate and Training Cycles). Likewise, the existing community resources in the municipality that contribute to the prevention and detection of hotbeds or places of consumption of addictive substances will also be analyzed, in addition to any other type of analysis and complementary studies that are considered.

For the Councilor Marciano Acuña "with the realization of these studies of the different municipal realities, which we started in Arrecife, the Cabildo of Lanzarote will have an island diagnosis on addictions in the island of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, which will allow us to have very valuable information to be able to work on preventive actions and a more effective intervention plan".

"The phenomenon of drug dependence", adds Acuña, "is a rather complex and dynamic reality, so administrations and, of course, professionals, have to give an effective response to these changes".

The collaboration and involvement of socio-health agents is also key. In this sense, the Councilor for Social Services of Arrecife, Maite Corujo, points out that "it is essential to have the participation of the different associations and groups that have been working for years in this field in these working groups in order to have a more complete analysis to be able to carry out agreed actions and measures in the care of social and health problems derived from the consumption and abuse of substances such as alcohol and drugs, as well as other addictions.

It should be remembered that in 2023, the Cabildo of Lanzarote already carried out a diagnosis of the reality in the municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants: Tinajo, Haría, San Bartolomé and Yaiza.
