The mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, has demanded that the Government of the Canary Islands speed up, among other issues, the administrative procedure for the mobile unit of the Vehicle Technical Inspection (ITV) to be transferred to the island of La Graciosa "as a matter of urgency".
The City Council, whose delegation on the eighth island is headed by Alicia Páez, demands that the relevant administrations ensure the presence "as soon as possible" of said device, "given the imperative need of many vehicle owners to pass the inspection in Caleta de Sebo, and thus avoid the unfair treatment being given to the residents of the eighth island, who do not have the possibility of review, but are subject to the relevant sanction", Betancort has pointed out.
"From the powerlessness of not having competences in this matter, we demand that the Government of the Canary Islands urgently formalize the awarding of the service so that it assists vehicle owners, so that they can carry out their inspection and continue circulating with all the force of the law", said the mayor of Teguise "in the face of repeated demands from the residents of La Graciosa and the daily battle of Alicia Páez in this regard".
Claiming "the same rights as other Canary Islands"
"A few days ago, many politicians were full of talk about having achieved greater autonomy and self-management for La Graciosa, and that it was recognized as the eighth island of the Canary Islands, but the reality in terms of services is different and does not respond to the needs of my residents, who simply want and demand the same rights as other Canary Islands, and therefore, I echo this new demand, demanding a quick response in terms of transport inspection and other pending issues", added Betancort.
"We know that the process of awarding the service is cumbersome, but we understand that there is a justification for the urgency", said the mayor in reference to the new Procurement Law, which has also listed "the limbo suffered by residents due to the lack of regulation in terms of urban planning, the lack of security personnel by the General Administration or the grievance in terms of the collection of fees from farmers", recalling that it also affects nuclei such as Caleta de Caballo and Caleta de Famara.
"For these reasons, we demand from all administrations that the eighth island, an unquestionable merit of the Citizen Council, does not remain a dead letter, that the rights of citizens and the services that entail the insular fact, are a real reality in La Graciosa and are treated the same as another Canary Island", concluded the mayor.
