The councilor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Armando Santana, has announced the presentation of a proposal in the next plenary session of the corporation with the aim of reinforcing the principle of institutional respect within the Island Administration.

The proposal seeks to include this principle in a Code of Good Conduct of the Cabildo, in order to promote ethical values and a coexistence based on courtesy and tolerance among those who intervene in public management in the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

This initiative arises in a context in which it is increasingly necessary to guarantee an adequate and constructive work environment, where communication and interaction between political representatives, public employees, suppliers and citizens are developed with due respect and professionalism.

In Santana's words, "respect is a fundamental pillar in any democratic institution and must be guaranteed in all interactions within the Cabildo." The councilor wants to underline the importance of this measure, which will not only contribute to improving coexistence within the island administration, but will also serve as a benchmark for good practices in the exercise of public management.

Among the main aspects of the proposal is institutional and personal respect, where it seeks to guarantee a dignified and adequate treatment among all the representatives of the Cabildo, promoting cooperation and constructive dialogue in the exercise of public functions.

This measure tries to avoid the use of derogatory or discriminatory expressions in the institutional sphere, promoting communication based on diplomacy and mutual respect, especially in plenary sessions and commissions.

"We must ensure equal treatment without distinction, the island administration must be an example of guaranteeing rights. We must promote a work environment in which dignity and mutual recognition are prioritized, fostering a harmonious coexistence among all members of the institution," he points out.

For Santana it is "important to ensure exemplary behavior in the relationship with councilors, public employees, suppliers and citizens, consolidating an institutional culture based on respect and responsibility."

Accessible to citizens, groups and media

"The exercise of a public office must be a constant commitment to the citizens. The availability of public representatives to attend to citizens, groups and the media is a fundamental condition for a transparent and participatory democracy," he argues.

"When a politician remains accessible, he not only strengthens the population's trust in institutions, but also allows a better understanding of the real needs of society. Open communication with the different social sectors guarantees that political decisions are more accurate, inclusive and respond to common interests," he continues.

Likewise, "the relationship with the media is key to accountability and avoiding opacity in public management. In a world where information circulates rapidly, the willingness to dialogue and clarify doubts avoids misinformation and fosters a more critical citizenry aware of their rights and duties," he explains.

Therefore, the availability of public office should not be seen as a secondary obligation, but as an essential principle of their work. Attending to the media not only strengthens democracy, but also dignifies the exercise of public service.

"I am convinced that this initiative will represent a significant advance in improving institutional relations and the quality of public service. It is essential that our institutions reflect the values of respect, equity and closeness that society deserves," he concludes.
