The former mayor of Yaiza, José Francisco Reyes, admitted before the judge in his statement that he earned money through operations using information about the sale of land in his municipality at a low price, according to the judicial summary of the case against him for the alleged authorization of illegal licenses to build hotels in Lanzarote.
According to Reyes, who was mayor between 1994 and 2007, during the period in which he held that position, he informed third parties of the sale of land at a low price. They bought them and later sold them for a higher price. The former mayor was given an amount of money for the information.
José Francisco Reyes assured that he did that operation "a couple of times" when he was mayor, although he refused to say who those third parties were and who "had lent him a hand on several occasions." He also did not specify the dates, the amounts received, or the location of the land.
Part of the money that came from those operations was deposited in cash in the accounts of the company Sean Sun Lanzarote, whose administrator is his son and who is the owner of the yacht 'El Pachi', moored in Marina Rubicón.
Regarding this company, Reyes stated that he knows that his son is not doing very well with the company and that he does not pay for mooring in the marina because he has an agreement with the property. Asked about the owners of Marina Rubicón, the former mayor stated that "he knows by hearsay that the visible people are Rafael Lasso, Juan Francisco Rosa, Martinón, and Francisco Armas." He also acknowledged that he personally went to speak with the port manager to use its facilities.
