PSOE, Somos and Ciudadanos have celebrated in a statement that the opposition has managed to make the president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, "rectify" the system for designating the members of the new environmental body that the institution will create. "Surprisingly, at the beginning of the extraordinary plenary session held this Friday, the president has rectified his initial intention to designate the members of the future environmental evaluation body in the Governing Board", they point out in the press release.
In this way, they emphasize that the members of the "insular Cotmac" will be "finally appointed by an absolute majority of the Plenary of the Cabildo, in public debate, with the participation of all political groups and after the search for consensus on the most suitable profiles in the corresponding Territorial Policy Commission".
"After the first defeat of the government group in the Plenary Commission held on Tuesday, and thanks to the pressure exerted by the opposition, Lanzarote will be able to end up having an environmental evaluation body whose designation is more transparent, democratic and the result of a desirable consensus on environmental and territorial development matters", they point out in the statement. As La Voz had already published, that rectification of the president, who has yielded in a part of what the opposition demanded, has led the PSOE, Ciudadanos and one of the councilors of Somos to vote in favor of the regulation to create this body, while the other representative of Somos and the Podemos group have maintained their vote against.
A body that should report on "such relevant issues" as the Island Plan
"The opposition organizations have been defending the competence of the Plenary to guarantee the participation of all political forces and councilors in the election of the people who will make up the body, in charge of environmentally informing issues as relevant as island planning", point out PSOE, Cs and the spokesperson for Somos, who consider that this change of criteria of the government group has meant "a victory in favor of the Island".
"The opposite restricts the decision regarding an entity that should act with independence, impartiality and objectivity to the government parties and a few public officials", they stated.
Now, they recall that after the publication in the BOC of the initial approval of the Organic Regulation of the Environmental Evaluation Body of Lanzarote, "a period of allegations will be opened through which all entities and individuals who wish to do so may express their opinion".
