The island secretary of the PSOE and head of the Socialist Party's list in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, has described the suspension of the Plenary by decision of Oswaldo Betancort in the face of threats from the Popular Party as "a real disgrace", considering it a serious political error that demonstrates the president's lack of responsibility and commitment to the real problems of the island.
"Lanzarote cannot afford a president who hides the debate and blocks the institution for partisan issues. You cannot govern an island like this by running away from the debate and turning the Cabildo into a space for confrontation outside the interests of the citizens," Corujo said.
The socialist leader recalled that there are clear legal reports and rulings from the Supreme Court that expressly advise against the use of plenary sessions for statements such as the one the Popular Party intended to promote: declaring the President of the Government of Spain persona non grata.
"It is unacceptable that, on an island with a housing emergency, a water crisis and tourist saturation, the Cabildo is paralyzed by senseless political disputes," he added.
Corujo regrets that, once again, Lanzarote is being dragged into national headlines by decisions that do not respond to the reality of the island, but to partisan interests that have little or nothing to do with the needs of the residents.
"When citizens expect management, Oswaldo Betancort responds with spectacle. What Lanzarote needs is leadership, dialogue and solutions, not more institutional blockades or more nonsense," he concluded.
