The Lanzarote en Pie-Sí Podemos group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote will defend a motion in the plenary session next Monday demanding "that the Master Plan for Tidal Pools of the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands be rejected"

With this, Podemos intends to guarantee "the protection of the eleven pools included in that proposal", of which eight are located in the Los Charcones area, between the Pechiguera Lighthouse and the abandoned Atlante del Sol hotel.

From the formation they point out that the government group of the Cabildo of Lanzarote "has a great opportunity to bury this disastrous project", after the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands decided to park it, "but make it available to the councils in case they want to activate it in each of the islands".

"The project has had a great social response against it", they maintain from Podemos, which adds that "in previous conversations between this formation and the government group, the latter is not willing to approve the motion and reject the project, probably to wait for a better opportunity to move it forward".

The LEP-Sí Podemos motion also asks the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa to "convene the Minister of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands to inform her of the culture of protection of the territory of the island of Lanzarote and the natural values of the affected areas in order to protect and maintain them".

From LEP- Sí Podemos they add that the project "intends to turn these pools into first-class tourist resources". In the case of Lanzarote, they affirm, "it would intervene in eleven pools, eight of them in the Los Charcones area plus the Charco de Montaña Bermeja, Charco de Punta de Órzola (La Laja) and Charco de Caletón Blanco".

"The project would include the construction of two parking areas in two areas near Los Charcones, which would add a total area of 4,000 square meters and could accommodate about 320 vehicles, in addition to the construction of elevated platforms to make a solarium, concrete stairs, garbage rooms, signs and signage", adds the formation.

Podemos believes that it is "an aggressive intervention in the environment"

Podemos believes that it is "an aggressive intervention" in the environment, "since it modifies it favoring the anthropomorphization of spaces that until now have been little or not at all altered". "Los Charcones belong to a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) included in the Natura 2000 network, in addition to the fact that its intertidal zone is a habitat that acts as a breeding ground for many species", point out from the political formation.

For these reasons, LEP-Sí Podemos calls on the people of Lanzarote "to demonstrate against this project, through any means at their disposal". "The risk that irrational and mercantilist tourism policies may resurface cannot be underestimated and this project would allow a huge influx of people that would put at risk the delicate biodiversity of these spaces", says Councilor Myriam Barros, who considers that this initiative "is incompatible with the territorial culture of the Island and with the climate emergency situation declared by the Island Council two years ago"
