They emerge from the sewers, frequent the garbage containers and even enter the houses. Cockroaches proliferate in some areas with the arrival of heat, and can become an important source of infections. The residents of Playa Honda see how every day, as night falls, these insects begin to invade sidewalks, roads and even the promenade of the town's avenue. "It's a shame to see how people move away while walking or cycling because of the cockroaches", explains Servando Pérez, president of the Canarian Nationalist Party, who has requested the San Bartolomé City Council to fumigate the most affected areas. "There is a pumping station here, so a lot of them always appear, which is very unpleasant," adds Servando.
From the Department of Social Services of the City Council of San Bartolomé it is assured that there is no record of said proposal. "The City Council has a contract of twelve thousand euros a year with a company for this type of maintenance, you just have to call them and tell them that there is a focus of cockroaches and they go and fumigate, it's a matter of minutes", explains the councilor Pedro Reyes.
While the neighbors show their complaints, the Councilor for Social Services explains that in some times of the year, "it is normal for cockroaches to appear in the sewage system and the sanitation network", although he assures that "as soon as I have the list of streets, I will call this service to fumigate, without any problem".
"The other day my neighbor opened a sewer under the house, and an incredible flock of cockroaches came out," explained a resident of Playa Honda this Tuesday. "I don't have any at home because I always use insecticide sprays, but you see a lot on the street." A block further on, another neighbor narrated: "They come flying, bigger and bigger, and they get into the houses, it's very unpleasant."
One of the main causes that can cause these cockroach plagues is, according to the residents, the accumulation of garbage that occurs in the streets, "especially around the containers." The bad odors in the sewage network also worry the inhabitants of Playa Honda, who say they have to close the windows and doors of their houses on some occasions.
