I'm not "thinking about it" and "I don't have this issue planned" were two of the phrases used by Paulino Rivero, president of the Canarian Coalition (CC), to deny to journalists that he will be the next candidate for the presidency of the Canary Islands for this formation. In fact, he stated bluntly that "I am not planning to present my candidacy."

In a meeting with the media in Las Palmas after the celebration of the meeting of the Standing Committee of CC, Rivero did not want to reveal who will head his party's list to the Canarian Government. In fact, he commented that "the decision will be made by the National Political Council" at the meeting to be held on February 3 in the capital of Gran Canaria.

In this sense, he added that for his party "the priority is not the candidate but the content of our messages." "If we manage to convey to the Canarians the changes that have been experienced in the Archipelago these twelve years, we will win the elections regardless of who heads the list," he added.

At this time, CC is considering choosing a candidate, "man or woman" who is "loyal to the project of this party and who knows how to transmit this message," said Paulino Rivero.

Axes of the campaign

At the meeting held in the capital of Gran Canaria, the members of the Standing Committee prepared a calendar of political events to be held in January and February, as a preamble to the political campaign that will begin in March. This first phase will focus on "a series of actions that will be transmitted to the population through radio, television and the written press," with the slogan "Made in the Canary Islands," explained Rivero.

The meaning of this phrase is based on the interest of the nationalist formation to explain to the population "the decisions taken in the Canary Islands, by people from here and that have meant the great change of these Islands," he added.

The basic axes of this campaign will be immigration, the increase in security controls and population growth, health and educational improvements, as well as the promotion of greater access to housing for the weakest economies. Rivero pointed out "that despite the great change experienced, we are going to offer a leap in quality in areas such as education, health and housing."

Regarding population growth, the nationalist leader was very concerned about the current dynamics in the Archipelago. In this sense, he added that "the Canary Islands cannot continue to grow to the extent that it is doing because we will not be able to guarantee a future for our citizens." He also stated that "if 50,000 people a year continue to come to the Canary Islands, we will begin to suffer a significant deterioration of services."

For this reason, he was in favor of initiating population control measures and stated that on this point "we will be inflexible with Madrid although we need their collaboration."
