Only 4.9% of the divers who visited Lanzarote in 2017 visited the Atlantic Museum, according to various studies published by the Cabildo Data Center. According to these figures, 176,644 tourists practiced diving on the island last year, but the underwater museum only received 8,729 visits between January and December 2017.
It was last Wednesday when the Cabildo released a report on the number of tourists who practice scuba diving on the island, after conducting an analysis of the "microdata" of the Survey on Tourist Spending prepared by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), which shows that "more than 176,000 tourists practiced diving on the island during 2017." And that figure contrasts with the statistics also published by the Data Center on the influx to the Tourist Centers, which reflect that the Atlantic Museum had only been visited by 8,729 people last year, which represents 4.9% of the divers who visited Lanzarote.
Regarding the first four months of this year, according to figures also from the Cabildo Data Center, 2,344 people have accessed the underwater museum, with February being the worst month, with only 383 visitors.
An average expenditure of 135.2 euros, although only 41.7 in Lanzarote
The study on 'Diving Tourism in Lanzarote 2017' reflects that of the 176,644 tourists who practiced diving on the island last year, the majority came from the United Kingdom (41.8%). 11% came from Germany, 8.7% from Spain and 7.9%, respectively, from France and Ireland.
The document also highlights that the incomes of tourists who opt for this activity are somewhat higher than other visitors and that the total average expenditure per tourist who practiced diving during that period was 135.2 euros, although most of it, specifically 93.5 euros, was at the origin, with only 41.7 euros spent in Lanzarote.
The Cabildo highlights that "the climate, tranquility and, above all, the quality of the coast" were the main reasons for their visit, emphasizing that "aspects related to nautical activities and the active tourism offer reached high percentages among their motivations for traveling to Lanzarote." Regarding the assessment of the destination, the study reflects that they take away "a good or very good impression" of their trip to the island. Like the rest of the visitors, the Data Center study reflects that this group mostly opts for the flight package with all-inclusive accommodation.
Finally, the document states that, in 2017, Lanzarote had 35 authorized diving centers, "being the island with the largest offer and concentrating almost a third of those existing in the Canary Islands, where they amount to 112." In addition, it is reflected that the offer has practically doubled in Lanzarote in four years, since in 2013 there were only 19 authorized diving centers.
