The councilor of Nueva Canarias in Teguise, Fernando Jiménez, has recalled his proposal to install a desalination plant in the town of Mala to supply water to the northern region.
Fernando Jiménez has demanded that the Cabildo of Lanzarote and Canal Gestión launch “serious and long-term decisions” that solve the continuous supply problems of drinking and agricultural water suffered by the northern region of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
Jiménez understands that the announcements by the current island government of CC and PP, of an investment plan of 90 million and two portable desalination plants that come from La Palma, are “mere patches and short-term measures that will not end the ordeal we are experiencing in this area of the island.”
For the Canarian, the municipalities of Teguise and Haría have been experiencing a true “water crisis with continuous unexpected cuts that put at risk the water supply to homes, businesses and the primary sector" for some time.
Therefore, they pay attention to one of their electoral proposals to locate a desalination plant in the
town of Mala that guarantees the regular supply of water to the residents of the northern region and, at the same time, provides water to the Mala dam, which is currently unused, argue from the organization.
“We have been defending this proposal from NC together with the Northern Irrigation Community, who have had a project for years to guarantee water in this region”, says Fernando Jiménez.
For the councilor of Teguise, forceful, courageous and strategic measures are required, as well as total transparency in the plans of the Island Council and Canal Gestión Lanzarote.
Thus, he proposes that the Island Water Council determine how this situation of maximum priority for the island will be addressed, with a schedule of action and a clear and real budget.
“The citizens of Lanzarote and La Graciosa have the right to have all the information about an asset as important as water. And the right to demand responsibility from our leaders derived from the deficiencies in public services. With more reason if they were the ones who have led us to this situation, as is the case of CC with the privatization of water management”, says Fernando Jiménez.
