The councilor of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) in the Teguise City Council, Fernando Jiménez, defended this Tuesday morning a proposal that sought to protect and disseminate the natural and cultural values of the El Jable area of Lanzarote. This proposal presented, among other points, to agree on a Local Pact for the Protection and Dissemination of the natural area of El Jable; urge the Cabildo of Lanzarote to take the necessary actions to protect El Jable, as well as disseminate its values, history, and biodiversity at the island level; urge the Government of the Canary Islands to halt the illegal extraction of aggregates that is carried out in El Jable and to halt new licenses until the damaged environment is recovered; and urge the Government of the Canary Islands to explore the possibility of declaring El Jable in its entirety as a Rural Park.

This proposal has been rejected by the government group of Coalición Canaria (CC), Partido Popular (PP), and the former Vox councilor, claiming that "El Jable does not need more protection because it is already protected and the city council is already doing a dissemination job."

For councilor Fernando Jiménez, the argument of the environment councilor of Teguise has been "unrigorous, full of generalities, common areas, and ignoring that there is a serious problem of lack of protection in this natural area as environmental groups, academic professionals, and people from the area have pointed out."

"There is no one more blind than the one who does not want to see. No one hides that El Jable is suffering significant deterioration in its biodiversity as well as in the image that the population of Lanzarote has of it, which has been moving away from its natural and cultural values due to a lack of institutional commitment. Denying this reality is worrying and shows that this government group is out of touch with the reality that is lived on the island," says Jiménez, who does not "understand how a proposal that seeks to agree among all the political forces present in the plenary session of Teguise on a protection agreement is rejected without further ado, without giving the slightest intention of dialogue."

From NC-BC, they see in the rejection of the government group to an initiative like this "an attitude that goes against protecting our natural spaces and our island. Values that are intrinsic to nationalism, defending the land and the people who inhabit it."

"We will continue to bet on taking care of our natural environment and our culture, for this reason, I will ask the deputy Yoné Caraballo to raise this proposal to the Parliament of the Canary Islands for its debate," says Fernando Jiménez.
