The writer Rafael Arozarena passed away on the night of September 29, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, at the age of 86. A piece of news that has been received with great regret in the municipality of Haría, to which he had a close relationship, due to the numerous visits made by the Canary Islands Literature Prize. Even the Municipal Library has many of his books on its shelves, which he used to bring personally every time he visited Lanzarote.

Mararía

Rafael Arozarena, born in Santa Cruz Tenerife in 1923, was the author of the renowned novel "Mararía", considered a classic work of Canary Islands literature, and which was brought to the cinema in 1998 by director Antonio José Betancor. Interpreted by the Canary Islands actress Goya Toledo and Carmelo Gómez, in the role of the good doctor, it was a great box office success, also featuring music by the Tenerife singer-songwriter Pedro Guerra. In 1988 he obtained the Canary Islands Literature Prize together with Isaac de Vega and just nine years ago, in 2000, he entered the Canary Islands Academy of Language.

For the mayor of Haría, José Torres Stinga, "we have not only suffered the loss of an extraordinary writer, but also of a magnificent and excellent person, who did not hesitate to attend any cultural event held in the Municipality of Haría".
