The Department of Parks and Gardens of the Arrecife City Council has carried out its annual environmental campaign, with the participation of 570 schoolchildren between 7 and 9 years old. The little ones enjoyed several outdoor activities: sealing bags - to replace plastic ones -; making seed bombs, and a guided tour of the City to interpret the green spaces, thus awakening, in the new generations, awareness of caring for the environment.

As part of the objectives of this initiative, the children approached the world of gardening through the urban route, an activity that allowed them to learn about the daily work carried out by the staff of the Parks and Gardens area. They also learned to make seed bombs, discovering their function in plant reproduction. For this, each participant used a container where they manually kneaded a mixture of clay, substrate, fertilizer and seeds.

Finally, they were explained the type of leaves to use for sealing bags, an activity that consists of placing the leaves collected from pruning trees in Arrecife in a bag, then pressing them with a mallet. To conclude the scheduled activity, a collective mural was made on the wall of the CEIP Titerroy.

Mayor Ástrid Pérez emphasizes the "involvement of schoolchildren in these awareness-raising actions towards green areas and gardens, as an educational formula for them to value more the need to care for and preserve them." Civism, the mayor recalled, "ensures that our city progresses by taking care of the environment where we live."

For his part, the Councilor for Parks and Gardens, Tomás Fajardo, highlighted: "It is essential that children can be in contact with the environment and become interested in gardening and flora from an early age. Raising awareness among the new generations of the importance of plants and green areas favors the development of a sustainable society. In addition, this type of activity promotes group coexistence among minors."
