The Breastfeeding team of the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in Lanzarote, integrated by Natalia Monzón, head of nursing of the hospital center, Rocío Monte, Nidos-Newborn Care nurse, Solange Arreyes, midwife of the Breastfeeding program and Ángeles Cabrera, supervisor of Gynecology - Obstetrics, presented this Friday, the data on the situation of breastfeeding on the island.

According to the data offered by the specialists in a press conference, "in the first semester of 2017, 64 percent of women responded positively to breastfeeding", which suggests that by the end of the year the figures of 2016 will be exceeded, a period in which 74 percent of the mothers opted for this form of infant feeding.

Also, during the event, several phrases coined by mothers who feed their babies with breast milk were read and have been collected in the campaign presented under the title: 'with much heart', celebrated these days in the hospital on the occasion of the World Breastfeeding Week.

World Breastfeeding Week

A team of more than 20 professionals has been in charge of organizing all the activities that have been taking place in Molina Orosa for several days to promote breastfeeding. Among them, the placement of an informative stand at the entrance of the center stands out, in which breastfeeding mothers have written messages on cardboard hearts to encourage future mothers and fathers to opt for breastfeeding for their newborns. The hearts collect, from the hands of the mothers, the benefits of breastfeeding to create a bond between them and their children, and the real experiences that some of them have wanted to share on the panel.

The Hospital, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has also given talks and published informative brochures on the benefits of breastfeeding, which offer advice and resolve some of the doubts that may arise for new mothers.

Guide to Good Practices

Coinciding with the celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, Molina Orosa has received the reaccreditation of its Guide to Good Practices by the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO).

This Guide, which has been developed by a group of professionals from the Gynecology-Obstetrics, Delivery Room and Pediatrics services of the center, is a tool that provides guidelines and recommendations to help professionals and mothers in making health decisions based on experience and objective evidence, and whose purpose is to optimize patient care, enrich professional practice and improve health outcomes.
