A delegation from the Canary Islands autonomous government, headed by the Minister of Economy and Finance, José Carlos Mauricio, is making an official visit to Morocco this Thursday, according to sources close to the Government of Rabat and later confirmed by the Government of the Canary Islands.
During the visit, Mauricio will meet with the Moroccan Prime Minister, Driss Jettu, and the Minister of Interior and Governance, Hamidou Laanigri, with whom he will discuss joint projects to be addressed in the future European project of the Greater Neighborhood Plan.
The objective of the visit, therefore, is to advance in the Action Plan document on this instrument, which will allow for new European aid for both areas, improve the fight against illegal immigration, and is considered key in the framework of the new Spanish-Moroccan collaboration.
In this preparation of the Neighborhood Plan, Andalusia is developing the Andalusia-Morocco North Plan, and on the other hand, the Canary Islands is in charge of the Canary Islands-Morocco South Plan (understanding by South from Tarfaya upwards, thus avoiding the controversy over the territory of Western Sahara).
Among the members of this delegation are Luis Padilla, director of relations with Africa; Arístides León, delegate of the Canary Islands company Proexca in Agadir, south of Morocco; and Héctor Benítez, the delegate of said organization in Brussels.
Along with Mauricio and the political leaders, a group of businessmen, mostly from Tenerife, are also traveling, who intend to close agreements in Morocco on the future maritime line that will unite the Archipelago with Tarfaya.
It should be noted that Canary-Moroccan relations have experienced an improvement in the last three years, especially in the economic field.
