Lanzarote "reinforces its position as a benchmark in sustainable tourism at Fitur 2025 with a series of strategic and innovative initiatives that confirm its commitment to responsible development and the conservation of its natural and cultural wealth." From alliances with global leaders in sustainability to meetings with European regions, the destination "consolidates its role as an international model of regenerative tourism."
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, announces that next February, "Lanzarote will be the epicenter of sustainable tourism with a conference organized in collaboration with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and the UN Global Compact Spain." The sessions will combine accredited training and practical dynamics to develop viable solutions in regenerative tourism, highlighting Lanzarote's role as an exporter of innovative models.
"These initiatives reaffirm that Lanzarote is at the forefront of sustainable tourism, working with world leaders to build solutions that transcend our island and bring value to the world," concluded Oswaldo Betancort, because "sustainability and regenerative tourism are not just an objective for Lanzarote, but the essence of our development strategy."
"Lanzarote is much more than a tourist destination; it is a model of how tourism can coexist in harmony with the environment, and therefore, our roadmap in this new tourism forum is marked by alliances that reinforce our commitment to innovation and sustainability," says Oswaldo Betancort.
In this sense, in addition to becoming the venue for the conference organized with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and UN Spain, Lanzarote continues to promote its tourism strategy with various actions, such as collaboration with Murmuration, a pioneering company in territorial intelligence and environmental analysis. "An agreement that will allow the island to implement tools based on satellite data to measure and minimize its environmental impact, thus protecting its biodiversity and natural heritage," explains Héctor Fernández, CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote.
Dossier of good practices: a model for Europe
In addition, within the framework of FITUR 2025, Lanzarote and La Graciosa have presented the dossier Discovering success stories of sustainability in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, a compendium of real examples of local companies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and certified by Biosphere.
This document highlights initiatives such as the energy efficiency of the Hotel Grand Teguise Playa or the reduction of food waste in the Puerto Bahía restaurant. Regarding this project, Héctor Fernández emphasized: "Sustainable tourism is not an option, it is a necessity. Lanzarote is committed to leading by example, showing how the sector can transform its practices to generate a lasting positive impact."
Leadership in NECSTouR: voice of European regions
On the other hand, the election of Héctor Fernández as a member of the board of directors of NECSTouR (Network of European Regions for Sustainable and Competitive Tourism), "reinforces Lanzarote's leadership in the European scene." In the recent meeting held at FITUR, strategies such as destination governance and climate action were discussed, consolidating Lanzarote's participation in the construction of the sustainable tourism future of Europe.
