The Cabildo of Lanzarote approved this Thursday in the plenary session held on the island of La Graciosa the motion presented by the Government group to urge the Government of Spain to desist from claiming payments from the residents of La Graciosa who are affected by the maritime-terrestrial demarcation. However, the spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Ariagona González, reiterated in the Plenary that, as already published by La Voz, Betancort never attended to the offers of Economy and Finance to regularize the homes affected by the demarcation of public land in La Graciosa.

The Ministry of Finance is demanding that the residents of Caleta del Sebo, in La Graciosa, pay significant sums of money, which in some cases reach 94,000 euros, arguing that the plots where their homes are located occupy part of public domain land. This claim affects residents who have occupied these lands for more than 40 years.

In this sense, the Government group adheres to this position and considers that it is "totally unfair that the State now claims payments from residents for land that they have legitimately possessed" for four decades.

Councilor Domingo Cejas recalled during his speech that the Teguise City Council itself expressed that this interpretation by the Ministry of Finance "is erroneous", although the council, during the mayoralty of Oswaldo Betancort, did not send the necessary documentation to defend this thesis.

As reported by this newsroom, the Teguise council alluded to "errors in the demarcation" and stated that it had topographic studies that confirmed these errors. In addition, it requested a return to the 1965 demarcation. However, the Delegation of Economy and Finance in Las Palmas requested the topographic studies from the council, but in three years it did not receive a response.

“We will defend the rights of the residents of Caleta del Sebo to the end. We cannot allow an outdated regulation to be applied that goes against the agreements reached and that, in addition, ignores the reality of a community that has cared for and respected its environment for decades," added the councilor.

For all of the above, it was approved in the plenary session of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa that it "urge the Government of the State to desist from claiming these payments from the affected residents and to resume the agreement on the new delimitation and demarcation in Caleta de Sebo, as agreed in 2006 with the approval of the PRUG of La Graciosa".

As president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, reiterates that "it is incomprehensible that they now intend to demand exorbitant payments from the residents of La Graciosa, who have asked to be legitimate owners after 40 years. It is a matter of justice and respect for the history and rights of these families".

For his part, the vice president of the Island Corporation, Jacobo Medina, assured that "it makes no sense that, after nearly half a century, the Government of Spain intends to claim unacceptable payments from the residents of the eighth island".
