Fishermen in Lanzarote will have a medical service in charge of their medical check-ups and inspections of the boats' medicine cabinets. This was confirmed by the senator of the Popular Party for the island of Lanzarote, Óscar Luzardo, who was very satisfied this Thursday for the efforts made with the Social Institute of the Navy, and that have led to the hiring of a doctor to attend, immediately, the needs of professional fishermen on the island.

"This addresses one of the main health demands of fishermen's associations and the sector in general," explains the senator in a press release. These mandatory and free revisions and inspections will also be carried out to other professionals related to the sea, such as the crew of tourist excursion boats or sport fishing, among others.

"Once this demand of the sector is resolved, it is expected that the monthly frequency of the revisions will satisfy the insular demand, although the commitment to study the permanent assignment of a doctor during the first months of the year is maintained, coinciding with the mooring of most of the fleet", explains Óscar Luzardo.

These recognitions made by the Social Institute of the Navy (ISM), attached to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, are prior to the enrollment of sailors and aim to "ensure that the psychophysical conditions of the applicant are compatible with the characteristics of their job and do not pose a danger to the health and safety of the individual or the rest of the crew".

Attention to more than 650 professionals

The medical service in Lanzarote will serve a group of more than 650 professionals, including about 350 fishermen and aquaculture professionals, 200 crew members of passenger ships, sea excursions and sport fishing, as well as a hundred students from the Fishing School in Arrecife.

The basic actions of the Maritime Health Program are medical examinations of maritime boarding, health training of sea workers, health campaigns of dissemination, health promotion and prevention, vaccination campaigns, control of medicine cabinets and control of hygienic-sanitary conditions of ships.
