The island director of Education, Juan Cruz, gave a talk this Wednesday in which, under the title "Educa Lanzarote 2011, he spoke about the management of the Ministry of Education in the islands and, especially, in this municipality.

At the event, which took place at 8:00 p.m. at the El Porvenir Society, Cruz was accompanied by the candidate of the Canarian Coalition for the mayoralty of San Bartolomé, Carmen González. The island director of Education presented the main lines of the educational policy that the Government of the Canary Islands has carried out in the Canary Islands, Lanzarote and San Bartolomé.

In his talk, Cruz stated that the improvement of educational quality will continue to be "a priority" for the Government of the Canary Islands during this year. In this sense, Cruz pointed out that the commitment to bilingual education is maintained, so that more than 4 and a half million euros will be allocated to the support and learning of foreign languages. Regarding the Family Training Program, Cruz pointed out that Education will allocate 520,000 euros.

Likewise, the island director of Education pointed out that "the Canary Islands is at the forefront, among the Autonomous Communities, in complementary services." In this sense, the Government of the Canary Islands will allocate a total of 8 and a half million euros for school canteens and breakfasts, 45 million euros for school transport, and 9 million euros for free textbooks.

On the other hand, Cruz affirmed that the Government of the Canary Islands also maintains its commitment to the equal opportunities of all Canarians. To this end, he explained, "an effort is made in educational compensation policies." In this sense, Cruz specified that 9 and a half million euros will be allocated to special educational needs, 350,700 euros to the Canarian Plan for extracurricular activities, 1,246,500 euros to the Support Program for immigrant students, and almost 6 million euros to the Support Program for Primary and Secondary schools.

Construction of new centers

In infrastructure and personnel, there are 18 budgeted actions for the construction of new educational centers in Lanzarote. In this sense, there is the El Quintero School of San Bartolomé, "waiting for the socialist government group to qualify the land", and the María Auxiliadora School of Montaña Blanca. Likewise, Cruz specified, various renovation works are being carried out in different centers on the island, as is the case of the construction of new classrooms in the Ajei School of San Bartolomé. In terms of personnel, in Lanzarote, the civil service has gone "from 50 to 77 percent", with the creation of new positions and the stability that this implies for educational centers.

The island director of Education also pointed out that the school failure rate has decreased from 36.9 to 31.3 percent in this legislature, with the Spanish average being 31.2 percent, and being the ninth community, even "above Catalonia".

Conference cycle

The talk given by Juan Cruz is part of the cycle of conferences that CC in San Bartolomé is holding to give an account of the management of its public officials in the main institutions of the Canary Islands and which was already inaugurated by the Minister of Social Welfare, Youth and Housing, Inés Rojas.

Likewise, after the colloquium, the formation collected the proposals, criticisms and demands of the citizens that will serve to prepare the electoral program of CC for the elections next May.
