Iberia's workers are planning work stoppages during the month of August. However, León Fajardo, spokesperson for the company's Strike Committee, assures that it is difficult for the situation of last summer to be repeated, due to the hiring of more than forty people by Iberia last April, which would reduce the effect of these stoppages. "Surely some flights will be canceled and there will be delays, but we should not take the point of measure of the famous 'ten thousand suitcases' because that is impossible to happen again," Fajardo explained.
At the moment, no dates have been specified, since "since we give clues, Iberia reacts and brings workers from outside," according to the spokesperson. In addition, they are also pending the forecasts of air traffic during the month of August, as well as the pending court rulings of some of the company's former workers.
Iberia has suffered another setback after AENA did not grant it the handling service license. These licenses have been awarded to two unions of companies: on the one hand Ferrovial and Menzies, and on the other, ACS and Evergreen. "The company that has won the tender is going to find a hot potato because Iberia is leaving this composed and with an unfavorable ruling," explains León Fajardo. The four hundred workers of Iberia and Eurohandling, another of the companies that has not had its license renewed, will have to be taken over by the new companies.
"They are going to lose social conditions such as the payments by agreement," added Fajardo. This transfer will take place from October 1 to next Christmas
