The spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Ariagona González, has denounced the serious situation experienced by homeless people during the recent heat wave that has affected the island, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees and with a red warning from Aemet.

“During the most critical hours of the day, shelters and reception resources remain closed, leaving these people without a place to shelter from the scorching heat. This is not only a problem of discomfort: we are talking about a real risk to their health and even their lives,” González pointed out.

The socialist spokesperson has criticized the lack of foresight of the competent administrations, demanding that “the Cabildo and the town councils must coordinate so that, in the face of episodes of extreme heat, spaces with air conditioning, shade and access to water are enabled so that no one is forced to remain on the street exposed to these temperatures.”

González recalled that “extreme heat does not understand administrative schedules or internal regulations. When protection is most needed is when it cannot be lacking.”

The PSOE of Lanzarote demands that the operating protocols of the shelters be reviewed and that specific climate emergency measures be included for homeless people, “because guaranteeing the health of vulnerable people must always be a priority.”
