The Molina Orosa Hospital has turned 32 this week and although it is considered a "young hospital", it has already "become small". This was stated this Thursday by the manager of Sanitary Services of Lanzarote, José Luis Aparicio, who has announced on Radio Lanzarote - Onda Cero the options that are already being studied for its expansion.

In fact, last Tuesday they received a visit from the Infrastructure Department of the Government of the Canary Islands to address this issue, and another meeting is scheduled for next Monday. "We have several alternatives and we have to see which is the most appropriate," said Aparicio, who pointed out that "probably" they will end up opting to build one more floor on the current building.

"There is an alternative that is so ambitious that the probabilities of it ending well are remote, they are not very realistic," he added, pointing out that this other one "is realistic" and that it could be executed "not in the short term, but in the medium term."

Regarding the possibility of building a new hospital, the head of Health in Lanzarote considers that it is not the time, since the current center "still has a very important capacity for growth and development." "It still has a lot of life ahead of it", he stressed.

In fact, he has referred to the services that are being expanded, both with new equipment and with works such as the radiotherapy unit, which is already underway. In addition, he has announced that at the end of this month they expect to also start with hemodynamics.

Having "a place prepared for when the jump has to be made"

However, José Luis Aparicio has pointed out that the construction of a new hospital should already be foreseen in the planning and territorial organization in the future. "Because of where it is located, which is being devoured and with everything built around it, sooner or later it will probably have to change location," he said.

Regarding when that situation could be reached, he has given a period of "10 or 20 years", and that is why he has insisted on the need to "leave a place prepared for when this hospital completes its life cycle and it is time to make the jump", so that what happened with the problems to get land for the Argana health center does not happen.

In any case, he has insisted that, for the moment, the current hospital is in full "expansive, growth process", and that it will continue to be so in the coming years.
