The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Blas Trujillo, made a visit to Lanzarote this Monday to learn about the progress of the construction works of the new emerging diseases building, which is being built on the Island to reinforce and increase the healthcare capacity of the Dr. José Molina Orosa University Hospital.
During the tour, the Minister was accompanied by the President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, the Director of the Health Area, Noelia Umpiérrez, and the Manager of Health Services, José Luis Aparicio, as well as other members of the Management's management team.
The Ministry of Health points out that the amount allocated to this work and its equipment is "15,943,000 euros", and it is expected that the work will be completed "by the end of June". The new building that the Ministry of Health is building attached to the Dr. Molina Orosa Hospital will allow "the urgent and immediate recovery of ordinary non-Covid-19 healthcare activity", as well as "maintaining and reinforcing the hospital capacity of the health area".
This new building occupies the free plot next to the Psychiatry hospitalization area, and is connected by a walkway to the rest of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital. The Ministry of Health details that it will have "90 new beds, another 8 intermediate care beds, 10 consulting rooms and 7 offices", as well as all non-healthcare support services, on 3 floors with a total of 5,000 square meters, connected by stairs and elevators.
Radiotherapy bunker
On the other hand, the Ministry of Health points out that the construction work of the Radiotherapy Oncology Unit of the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital of Lanzarote has already been officially received by the SCS and work is currently being done on the tender for the equipment.
The equipment for this new service, which the Ministry affirms has a budget of 2.1 million euros, is included within the Investment Plan in high-tech equipment in the National Health System, INVEAT Plan, of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
The Ministry of Health details that this new unit consists of "two consulting rooms, a professional work area, an administrative support area, waiting rooms and the bunker where the linear accelerator will be located, with its control area and technical support".
The Minister explained that the SCS is maintaining all the required contacts with the Nuclear Safety Council for the mandatory validation of the installation equipment, radiological monitoring and surveillance, as well as the maintenance models. "With this measure, we are advancing management formulas to be able to gain time when the installation is carried out", Trujillo clarified.
"The efforts we have made to ensure that the regional Executive prioritizes these actions are bearing fruit and Lanzarote will soon have new infrastructures that are as demanded as they are necessary", highlighted the President of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo.
Finally, the Ministry of Health maintains that the construction work of the new Hemodynamics unit of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital is currently continuing, which has a budget of 620,000 euros and whose work is scheduled to be completed before the summer. It will allow "studies of cardiac and cerebral catheterizations, different radiological intervention techniques and hemodynamic, electrophysiology procedures and implantation of devices such as coronary stents and pacemakers" to be carried out, which will avoid trips to the reference hospital.
